Teen Boot Camps for At Risk Youth

An option that was popular 10 years ago was the teen boot camp. Many parents sent their at risk youth to boot camps for troubled teens. Some at risk youth were able to turn their lives around, and become productive adults. Other teens had traumatic experiences, and still hold animosity to their parents and the boot camp staff. Even worse problems have occurred in some at risk youth boot camps where children were abused and even died as a result of the treatment they received. There are still some boot camps for at risk youth in operation today. Some are regulated by and even run by the state they are in. These types of boot camps are usually part of the juvenile detention system of the states they are located in.

Private At Risk Youth Boot Camps

There are also still some private at risk youth boot camps in operation today. They have sharply diminished in the last few years however. The decline of this type of boot camp has come as a result of the negative press associated with the at risk youth boot camps that abused their cadets. It is always sad when children are abused, especially when parents have entrusted their children in the care of someone else. Some studies have indicated that at risk youth boot camps were not very effective after the teen returned home. This may be due in part to the fact that a teen will usually do what they are asked when a drill sergeant is breathing down their neck. When the drill sergeant is gone, and they are once again free, many times they will return to their negative behaviors.

Christian At Risk Youth Boot Camps

Some programs containing boot camp components are able to operate under the title of Christian Boot Camps. Some states will allow boot camps to operate virtually unchecked and unlicensed because they come under religious protection. It is always wise to check with any states child protection agencies when contemplating placing your at risk youth in any type of facility. It is wise to know if any programs have had any reports of abuse, neglect, or even deaths associated with their programs. This type of information should be public knowledge and should be readily available with a little effort.

At Risk Youth Programs and Positive Peer Programs

There have been some great strides in the at risk youth programs associated with positive peer style programs. The reason these types of programs are successful may be due to their practical application. They operate on the premise that a teen must learn to make appropriate choices while in the program they are in. Once the at risk youth has learned to make good choices for the right reasons they are much more likely to succeed.
